10. I believe that the voices of two people have a greater result than a solo singer. In the songs, ‘High high’ and ‘Don’t Go Home(집에가지마)’, GD shows off his awesome flow of rap that give off great vibrations towards the audience. On the other side, TOP gives a more powerful and stronger rap with more impact than GD’s light flow.
GD: TOP’s voice is very solid and charismatic, whereas my rap is very thin. (Laughs) Together, both of our raps combined to create a harmonious flow of rhythm and beats.

10. However, in contrast of the two people’s albums, you can tell that they are having a lot of fun. In reality, you can feel like you are floating when you listen to the word, ‘High’.
GD: Yes, we like that genre.
TOP: It’s very dreamlike and we wanted to make sure that there were powerful sounds all throughout our album.

“We made a wonderful collaboration with Teddy.”

10: What made you guys pick this sort of sound for your album? Rather than making people feel like they’re partying at a club, ‘High high’ or ‘Oh Yeah’ gives a more liberated feeling to the audience.
GD: First of all, when we close our eyes and listen to the lyrics of the song, we picture an image. And like a film, I wanted to make music visual. If you make it exciting from beginning to all the way to the end, the music is really boring. Even at concerts, our fans have to feel that we’re dominating by knowing when to push it, when to pull it, when to make it exciting, and when to make the feeling higher, and all that will make our concert even more exciting. So when the running time is short, we have to create emotional or flow changes, giving different effects to create an atmosphere of different feelings.

10. So are you guys trying to make a club feel more alive? Every song has spaciousness in the background music and each song has a different theme depending on the lyrics.
GD: In those parts, we have to be very detailed. “Hey, give the mix to someone who’s good at them” We don’t say that when we finish the recording. When we finish recording we would say, “Hyung! In this section, we have to make sure that the feeling gets higher and that we have to impress the world with our improvements in skill” so that the outcome of the song is successful.
TOP: At our company, sound mixing has an outcome with the most sincerity. Sometimes our President (Yang Hyun Suk) mixes some of the sounds as well. This time, we have an album with a CD and a digital single where people can download the song from our website so it’s a bit different this time. We have to match the listening environment according to what our president says. (Laughs)
GD: So YG has Perry’s generation and Teddy’s generation of sound mixing which is different to our generation of sound. To imagine a different sound depending on the producer, that’s exactly what gets reflected in the album.

10. So ‘High high’ or ‘Oh yeah’ has a glimpse of Big Bang’s electronica style, and the two men in the club seems to be making a recreational space. At first glance, it seems like a regular song, but with such a feeling of space in the commitment of the club, many people might enjoy or not enjoy the song.
TOP: At first we listened to that part and thought it can be changed in some way. We gave a different style of music from what we would usually do to a song by Big Bang. But when it was presented to the public, we wanted to put some color into the song. We came back after a long time and wanted to do something that was new for us. Through our music, I wanted to make people in the club know that, “Oh, so when you go to a club, that’s how you play or, when you listen to this song, you jump and dance like this or that so you can become a god”. So as people watch our performances, people will understand how to think like that.

10. However the two title songs, ‘High high’ and ‘Oh yeah’ are not written by the two people.
TOP: At first when we tried to plan about the songs we were going to make we wanted a more warm sounding music. However, we needed to consider what the public was going to think when they first heard our songs, and the president heard what we said to him and asked Teddy to help make the songs. The direction of making a song has to be in our familiar style of music.
GD: Truthfully, we didn’t have Teddy write a lot of our Big Bang songs. Even though we always talk with Teddy about how the outcome of the song should be like, this time it was a bit hard for him to write the song since it was such a new style to him. We thought that the songs wouldn’t work out since it was so hard for him to write so we told him six months earlier and Teddy made his decision. (Laughs) When Teddy finishes writing the frame of the song, it’s up to us to create the actual lyrics. So Teddy takes off his hands completely for us to finish the job. And then after that, we work with Teddy again to finish the vibe of the song and how it should feel for the audience when they listen to it. So that’s how we worked together to write these two songs.

10. Although ‘High high’ was not composed by GD, his style sort of came out strongly. At each interval on each song, there is a change of feeling that is enjoyable.
GD: Maybe my style comes out in that song because I like to start hard and hold back TOP–and when TOP comes out he hits hard too and so we make a flow of rhythm to this fun song. We want the audience to never get bored.
TOP: I think that’s the result of cooperation. Each of the styles provide direction once Teddy’s process of adding a new interpretation began. So I believe that we came out with a new style of music.

“We wanted this kind of music so we can leave people speechless.”

10. But actually, the song reaction to ‘High high’ or ‘Oh yeah’ was okay, but not a lot of people know the reaction to ‘Bbeokigayo’ or the song that was never performed, ‘Don’t Go Home’. Like ‘Bbeokigayo’, there was no melody and through rap, you guys created a hip-hop sense of music, making it hard for you guys to make the song.
TOP: Truthfully, we didn’t care about what music the public wanted to hear, we wanted to create our own style. But I also had that feeling where I cared about the audience too. When GD and I come together, we emphasize the hip-hop feeling and we wanted to try things when we’re still represented as one of the youth idol groups of Korea. Big Bang is a team of two years–we learn, relax, and felt that the style that can represent the youth the most would be hip-hop music.
GD: I do not own the music Big Bang makes, nor the music industry’s fast-changing landscape. When someone releases an album, people listen to their title song and forget the rest of the songs in that album. And before that, we’ve been nostalgic for the song. When I was young, I would meet my friends and listen to the title song and dance around. I’m nostalgic to that feeling now. But nowadays, everything is decided in only three weeks, and “I only remember the chorus of that song” is said often to people who usually listen to our songs once or twice. If that happens, then we have to include some of the album songs other than the title songs to get people’s attention. Doing this provides attention to all the songs in the album and they create a complete flow of goodness.

10. Are you saying that ‘High high’ isn’t the only title song?
GD: We wanted to make an album where some people would listen to ‘High high’ and love it, whereas other people would listen to ‘Baby good night’ and love it too. We wanted to do that so people wouldn’t exclude songs over another. Teddy worked on an average of albums where I saw that he chose the song that appeals more than the other songs to fill in for the nonexistent excitement in the album.

10. In this album, if you took out ‘High high’ and ‘Oh yeah’, then it wouldn’t really be an electronica genre but more for a hip hop genre.
TOP: Usually we want to create music where our genre is similar to all the other albums we have made. But we also want to make a full album of electronica genre songs so we won’t get bored. After thinking about it, we wanted a few songs that were new to everyone, and a few songs that people were already comfortable with so it would create a balance between them.

10. If it was like that, couldn’t you have put a funkier tune for the title song? For example, if you had put ‘Bbeokigayo’ as the title song, then the mainstream of the music would have presented a different style.
TOP: That’s a little unfair. (Laughs)
GD: I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this, (Laughs) but the name ‘Bbeokigayo’ came out of a korean drama . In that drama, the main character would always yell, “Bbeoki ganda Bbeokigayo!”. (Laughs)

10. Personal experience seems to be related with music too. (Laughs) But did the two of you want to get people’s personal reactions when they listened to your music? Most of the lyrics are personal stories of you two men, and you are sharing them with the public.
TOP: Since we only showed the public our colors, all the listeners have no choice but to admit that there was still some wind in our music. So when Big Bang releases some kind of music, no one can say anything about it because it’s from our own personal experience and it’s what we wanted the world to hear.

10. Doesn’t your favor in music change in any way? After your debut through Big Bang, there were a lot of things other than being singing that you were very talented in.
GD: It’s been about five years since Big Bang debuted, and we’re all very proud of ourselves. When we first started working on ‘Bbeokigayo’, we began to look at it as our title song but thought that would be too difficult. The way we are right now is the way it was intended to go. As we do many more performances, people will start to accept our music naturally. We always dreamed that we’d have flowing picture without anything going wrong.
TOP: When you listen to our album, you shouldn’t just listen to it with your ear, you should draw a picture inside your head, and relax.
GD: Another word about Big Bang, we know that we delayed our comeback, but it was because of GDTOP’s new album. But whether it’s Seungri’s album or our album, it’s all a step to create a really impressive and great Big Bang album. The important things would be which members would go solo, which members would pair out, how they would comeback, and etc. That way we would have a lot of shows and you’d better enjoy it every time. Because of those rumors, our Big Bang members tend to get sad and painful headaches.
TOP: Our members don’t really fight or argue a lot. (Laughs)

“We hope that Big Bang will increase their talents and show the world that they are worth showing their skills to the world.”

10. How is Big Bang going to transition into a new comeback?
GD: When the Big Bang members come together to talk, we always talk about our comeback. “This time, let’s have some warm music.” In some people’s views, a lot of people may be bored with our style of music, which is why we have to switch it up at times. These days, our world is going through tough times and we feel as if a lot of people’s styles in music have changed greatly. Though we’re still very young, but our generations and younger generations styles differ greatly. If we can change those kind of things through music, we’ll grab any chance. That’s the reason why we wanted to do warm music, and through Big Bang, we might have a chance of changing the concept of Korean music in general. The reason people liked Big Bang was because music and style met together and created a very unique sound.

10. While making this album, it seems that you two have become men.
GD: In the past two years, there have been a lot of rumors with Big Bang and our resting activities, rather than the maturity growing in all five of the members. We’re still so young, but I feel like Big Bang has expanded into a bigger group. Though I can’t say everything, I believe that the next Big Bang album isn’t just about how we release the album and in what style, but how much we have matured in our talents.

10. A bigger group?
GD: I think that in the future, the scope of Big Bang will widen significantly.

10. Seeing the two of you perform and comeback after a long time, we feel as if you two have matured greatly and have found a balance with music.
TOP: Certainly our personalities have changed greatly too, but not in the bad way. (Laughs) I believe that since the boundaries have been loosened, we were able to go all out on this album. I don’t think that chart rankings are really that important to us in this stage.
GD: As we produced this album, we felt ourselves maturing too. When people listen to our music, we don’t want them to think: “Oh, these people think like that?” but like “Oh, since they’re those people, they think like that!” That’s how we would become more mature than before and impress the world.
