Monocle, a weekend programme on Bloomberg hosted by Tyler Brule, does a “tour around the globe” weekly, with reports on everything from culture to stock trends. This week, Brule talks about the South Korea’s hottest music exports, which includes a roving report by Robert Bound on GDT.O.P’s astounding popularity. YG producer Jinu Kim & 2NE1 also make an appearance. Below are snippets of the content that are related to our darling YG:
“The fervor of homegrown fans sets the bar high. Sub-zero temperatures aren’t going to stop these girls from catching a glimpse of superstars G-Dragon and T.O.P, here to release singles from their latest project. At 22 years of age, they’re already two of the most recognizable faces of Asia.”
“However you look at it, people seem to be feeling a sense of discovery and mystery about Korea. It seems that they’ve seeing us in a positive light.” – T.O.P.
“Right now, to know that a lot of fans around the world are listening to music from our tiny country, it’s got to have a huge effect on the Korean music scene. But, as the situation changes very rapidly, the scene’s got to develop just as fast.” – G-Dragon.
“YouTube right now is the best vehicle for us to reach our core demographic audience which is young people. The world, not just Korea – there are no boundaries or borders anymore. We no longer have to rely on TV stations and radio stations. Social networking has been the vehicle of choice.” – Jinu Kim, YG producer.
