Big Bang & Busker Busker dominate first half sales according to MELON CHART!

As the first half of 2012 comes to a close, music lovers are weighing in on their favorite artists and albums of the first half of the year.

Busker Busker, who entered the mainstream K-pop scene after winning Mnet’s audition program “Superstar K3” last year, came up big both on the singles and album chart, according to data tallied by music distribution website Melon.

The trio indie band has highlighted the first half of 2012 with two albums released already, and surprisingly edged out K-pop icon Big Bang in just three months of dropping the debut album.

At the rate it’s going, Busker Busker’s self-titled album could be the best seller of 2012, making it an unprecedented example in recent years for an upstart indie band to achieve such an impressive feat.

The chart rankings below are based on the number of downloads and streaming online polled by Melon between January 1 and June 25.

SINGLES CHART-

Beloved by people of all ages, indie band Busker Busker’s “Cherry Blossom Ending” is the highest ranking tune so far this year. Stirring up the first love syndrome in Korea, the tune’s nostalgic sounds and lovely lyrics have brought the TV audition-born-babies a huge popularity.

With a small gap from the top status, Big Bang grabbed the No. 2 spot with “FANTASTIC BABY.”

Though the group had gone through difficult times last year, Big Bang was “STILL ALIVE,” or more than alive, as it is the only group to place two singles and albums in the top ten of both charts.

Next up is T-ara’s “Lovey-Dovey,” followed by Ailee’s big-hit debut single “Heaven” and SISTAR’s “Alone.”

Other top-selling singles of the year so far are LYn’s “Back in Time,” the theme song for MBC’s “The Moon Embracing the Sun,” 10cm’s remake tune “Sorrow,” songstress IU’s “You & I,” and duo unit Trouble Maker’s “Trouble Maker.”

ALBUM CHART-

The three-member band’s unique musical sound was much-touted on the album chart as well.

Busker Busker easily outsold other popular discs in Korea after topping Melon’s weekly album chart for nine consecutive weeks upon its release. According to the data, the group notched up record sales of the year that is four times bigger than the number posted by IU’s second mini-album “Last Fantasy.”

The trio band’s big feat has bumped Big Bang’s fifth mini-album “ALIVE” down to No. 2. However, Big Bang saw another big feat in June with “STILL ALIVE”—the special edition of the original— which showed its “MONSTER” power of sitting at No. 7 in less a month.

Meanwhile, “Infinite Challenge”—The title of MBC’s legendary variety show starring eight comedians— took the fourth place with “I Am a Singer.”

The project album is composed of seven songs that they had performed at the program’s concert and aired on the channel in January with overwhelming responses from the audience.

Other albums in the top ten include 2AM’s “F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Way Of Love,” SISTAR’s “ALONE,” IU’s “Spring of Twenties” (translated title), Baek Ji-young’s “Good Boy” and LeeSSang’s “Unplugged.”
