After a summer when we had two typhoons, we now see Taeyang. We had this interview at the end of September and he had been practising with his band until
then for his concert. He practised until 4am so he was so tired to get up.However, he was still wearing his unique smile on his face. Taeyang has been working in group and solo in the past 4 years, we have been wondering when we can ask him about his stories in these years and how he thinks about music. Our interview started with asking him how he had transformed after his solo album was released in 2008. We think that no matter what, he must have undergone some changes. Taeyang said, ‘I have set being a singer as my target from the beginning until now and I have been working so hard on it. I don’t think there are much changes in these years, ‘he continued, ‘I have been troubled by my new album. I finally realized how little I know ever since I worked as a group. Can it be counted as a change? I have to do a lot of things always but what I want to do has increased in number recently…’
Q: You have spent half of your life in YG until now. As a member of it,do you feel there are any changes?
Taeyang: I do feel a lot when we have moved to a new place recently. We have more production especially when I am with the brothers or G-Dragon… I think we belong to the spirit of Daegam if you take our activities into account.
Taeyang: Yes, I do think so. (Laugh)
Q: I am sorry that I have to say you are approaching 30, aren’t you afraid of this? Taeyang: Yes, I am and there are lots of things that I am afraid of.
Q: Why?
Taeyang: I did not think that I would be afraid of something 1/2 years ago but when I was producing the music that I want and doing solo activities, I have encountered a lot of problems. It seems that several years ago. I painted a very huge picture and I wanted to finish it as soon as possible. Then, what I am doing now is trying to make that picture come into life. I have been puzzling how to draw it out so far; however, I seem to think about this issue too much and then cause fear for me when I am trying to tackle the problem. This is not a real fear of difficulty, I will solve the problems with faith.
Q: You are very positive! I don’t want to talk about such tiring problems. I remember that you are not a very tough person so I wonder how you overcame your problems before you debuted?
Taeyang: I just cannot give up.
Q: Can you show us that you are not that kind of person who do whatever he wants impulsively?
Taeyang: When I released my EP in 2008. I did have a lot of ideas. Even if they were only trivial things, I would be the one in charge. I was not required to be that but that was how I am developing into.
Q: Then you must be respected by others.
Taeyang: But there is pressure and I bear the burden of responsibility too.
Taeyang thinks a lot and what he worries most is his unusual character and they call him ‘ training worm’. Although this name is a bit weird, he does really look like one. If he falls down, he will still stand up and carry on my training. In the summer of 2008, since he wanted to sing the song ‘sinner’ well, he had been practising the choreography repeatedly. He even needed to sing while he was dancing. This was very difficult indeed. Somebody told him it was okay to sing not that well but he responded, ‘Ah… but I am a singer. How can I lower my singing quality in order to dance well?’ And after a week, he performed ‘sinner’ on the stage.
Taeyang received an online award and even the YG president praise him too. It all seemed that all the issues about his ‘worries’ are lies.
Taeyang: I cannot fix my time as the time to ‘only fix these things’, I think that I have to keep working continuously.
Q: Will you be angry if someone criticizes you? (laugh)
Tayang: I will not be very angry but rather, I will listen to their opinion seriously so later, I can correct the mistakes that I have made.
Q: So you will carry on until you have achieved excellent result?
Taeyang: Yes, at least I have to feel satisfied with it.
Q: Have you ever puzzled about whether to be an idol or an artist?
Taeyang: No, I only want to be an artist.
Q: That is the only thing you want to be?
Taeyang: Ah…I will be one. (Laugh)
Q: It is because you are famous now, perhaps you can do all of these very easily but will you really throw away all of your fame in order to be a musician?
Taeyang: Yes, I will. .
Q: Ever since you debuted, you have been very famous. What if you cannot be a musician? Will you continue to strive for your dream?
